Control room — Configuration

Written by Yoanna Hristova

The Configuration tab defines the video mixes, video encoders, and audio encoders available in a control room. These settings determine what outputs can be produced, which encoding profiles are used, and whether each output is recorded.

A typical configuration includes one or more video mixes, at least one video encoder, and any required audio encoders for programme, commentary, or multilingual audio.

Video walkthrough

This walkthrough covers the Configuration tab, adding video mixes, and setting up video and audio encoders.

Video encoders

Video encoders define how a selected video mix is encoded for output. Each encoder is linked to a video mix and an encoding profile.

Field

Description

Example

Name

The name of the encoder shown in the control room configuration.

Main programme encoder

Video mix

The programme mix that the encoder uses as its video source.

Main programme

Encoding profile

The encoding profile used to determine output quality, bitrate, and format.

1080p live output

Recording

Defines whether the encoded output should be recorded.

Enabled

Audio encoders

Audio encoders define the audio tracks available for output. These can be used for programme audio, commentary, multilingual streams, or alternative audio versions.

Field

Description

Example

Track name

The name used to identify the audio track.

English commentary

Encoding profile

The audio encoding profile used for the output.

Stereo audio

Language

The language associated with the audio track, where applicable.

English

Recording

Defines whether the audio output should be recorded.

Enabled

✅ Tip: Set the language value on every audio track, even for single-language productions. Downstream platforms and recordings use it to label the track correctly.

How to review the configuration

  1. Open the required control room.

  2. Select the Configuration tab.

  3. Review the listed video mixes and confirm each required programme output exists.

  4. Review the video encoders and confirm each one uses the correct video mix and encoding profile.

  5. Check whether recording is enabled for outputs that must be captured.

  6. Review the audio encoders and confirm each required track, language, and profile is present.

  7. Remove or update any unused configuration before the room is used for production.

Notes

Standard live stream

One main programme mix, one video encoder, and one programme audio encoder.

Use when a single output is required.

Recorded production

Main programme mix with recording enabled on the relevant video and audio encoders.

Confirm storage and recording requirements before the event.

Clean feed and programme output

Separate programme and clean feed mixes, each assigned to the required video encoders.

Use clear names so operators can identify each output quickly.

Multilingual event

Main video mix with separate audio encoders for each required language.

Confirm language labels and profiles before going live.

Review checklist

  1. Confirm all required video mixes are present.

  2. Confirm each video encoder uses the correct mix and encoding profile.

  3. Confirm recording is enabled where required.

  4. Confirm all required audio encoders are present.

  5. Confirm audio track names, languages, and profiles are correct.

  6. Remove unused mixes or encoders before production.

📕 Note: A control room can be started with an incomplete configuration. Complete this checklist before a live event, otherwise a production can go to air without the outputs or recordings it was expected to produce.
