Audio Mixer — Automation

Written by Yoanna Hristova

Automation mode offers powerful control over input tracks, governing several automated behaviours to streamline your audio workflow. This article covers the two key features: Follow Video and Mute Sources Below.

Mastering the Follow Video behaviour

Follow Video automatically adjusts audio levels based on whether a specific video source is currently live in the program output. The behaviour relies on two settings.

Setting

What it controls

In level

The volume the audio plays at when its corresponding video source is active in the program

Out level

The volume when the video source is not in the program

Setting up Follow Video

  1. Map and name your tracks. Make sure inputs such as Camera 1, Camera 2 and Camera 3 are properly routed and named

  2. Enable Follow Video. Go to the automation settings for your tracks and turn the option on

  3. Adjust the levels. Set your In and Out levels — for example, keep Out at 0 dB and set In by moving the faders and using the Set button

  4. Initialise the controls. Cycle through each video source once to initialise the automated level controls

  5. Fine-tune transitions. Adjust the transition duration to avoid abrupt audio jumps — a longer duration creates a smooth fade between tracks during source switches

📕 Note: Don't skip step 4. The automated level controls are only initialised once each source has been taken to program at least once.

Using Mute Sources Below

Mute Sources Below lets a higher-priority video asset — a commentator file, for example — automatically silence specific audio tracks layered beneath it when it goes live.

Setting up Mute Sources Below

  1. Access asset settings. Open the settings for your primary video asset, such as the commentator video file

  2. Enable muting. Select Mute Sources Below, which instructs the asset to fire a mute command to any layers beneath it

  3. Target specific tracks. Choose which underlying audio tracks should respect that external mute command

Once configured, any selected track mutes immediately as soon as the main video file is taken to air.

✅ Tip: Mute Sources Below works best in combination with Follow Video. Because it only mutes live sources — those actively contributing to the program output — pairing the two automation modes gives seamless audio dipping during transitions.
